Power

While positional power gives you the license to act, it’s your unique personal power that makes you effective. While power is often described in terms of either/or—you either have it or you don’t—your power is actually a complex system of different abilities, traits, and characteristics related to personality, life experiences, social status, and position.

Each of us has a Powerprint, an intricate and completely individual mix of life experiences, traits, and abilities that enable us to influence others and impact the world around us:

  • Mind your Powers: Which powers (aka strengths) do you rely on most? Which do you forget to acknowledge? Which powers have yet to be developed?
  • Mind your Triggers: Which situations upset you? Which situations do have a solid handle? What practices do you rely on to keep you focused and centred?
  • Mind the Gap: Make it a habit to self-examine from the outside in. Imagine others see you as having more power than you feel. How might that help you use your power better?

Influence

The higher up you are, the more dependent you are on team members for information, and you’re at greater risk that you won’t get the information, or if you do, it’s somehow biased or incomplete.

Our advanced leadership development programs help optimize a leadership portfolio by measuring how effectively titled leaders use power—personal and positional—to achieve results, empower the people around them, and influence others up, down, across, and outside the organization.
